“The journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” -Lao Tzu

Are you someone who is seeking support in balancing your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health? Are the demands of life causing you to show up in some areas and lack in showing up for yourself? You are not alone, maintaining balance is an everyday journey and sometimes we must draw on the support of others to take the necessary steps in our journey towards wellness and holistic health. I am here to support you in taking that single step and stay the course.

My specialty is in empowering and supporting others to take action in improving their overall quality of life. I believe that everyone can achieve holistic health and well-being as long as you are equipped with the tools to achieve it. As your therapist, I will help you achieve your wellness goals using a multidisciplinary approach. This involves drawing on several modalities to curate a treatment plan that is client-centered and meets your needs.

Having a background in Energy Medicine, Hatha Yoga, and Mindfulness Meditation allows me to pull from these modalities to curate sessions that address the overall holistic health of a person. Clients can choose to include sound therapy, mindful meditation, and somatic movement along with their sessions to help release any imbalances and challenging emotions that come up. As an evidence-based practitioner, I am skilled in strengths-based therapy that is solution-focused and motivational interviewing. I work with clients of all ages and backgrounds and have extensive experience working with adolescents diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare with a minor in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley and Goldman School of Public Policy respectively. I received my Master of Social Welfare with a concentration in Social and Economic Justice from the University of California, Los Angeles.

If you enjoy leaving sessions feeling grounded and equipped with an action plan with practical steps to achieve it, then look no further. I provide a warm environment where you feel heard and not judged. My goal is to remind you of your strengths and help you release all that no longer serves you so you can build the life you truly desire. I look forward to the opportunity to partner with you in this journey ahead. Let’s take the first step together.

“Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.” -Margaret Mead

You–just like everyone else–are a unique individual. While I use evidence-based practices in all of my sessions, I always customize treatment plans to cater to your individual needs and unique personality. We were not meant to bear life’s challenges alone. So whether you just need someone to talk to or you need a more comprehensive treatment plan, I’m eager to offer my support during this difficult time.

I embarked on this journey to assist people in overcoming life’s obstacles over 15 years ago. I have over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. I also have experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults from diverse backgrounds. I’ve worked with foster family agencies, public agencies, hospitals, and residential treatment services. With a B.S. in Psychology, a Minor in Child and Family Development, and a Master’s in Social Work from San Diego State University, I am well equipped to help you deal with anything life hands you.

It takes strength to recognize when you are in need of support. It takes courage to reach out and ask for help. I commend you for taking this first step toward healing, and I look forward to providing you with a safe space to work through life’s challenges. Together, we can get you where you want to go.

“I wish to live because life has within it that which is good, that which is beautiful, and that which is love. Therefore, since I have known all of these things, I have found them to be reason enough and — I wish to live. Moreover, because this is so, I wish others to live for generations and generations and generations and generations.”
― Lorraine Hansbery
I believe that although life has its highs and lows, we owe it to ourselves to seek out the balance. Using therapy as a tool to express the things we have yet to understand or those in which we have not yet found comfort, my wish is to help guide you through the journey.

My name is Mashaunda McBarnett, and I am a clinical trainee with a B.A in Applied Psychology and Human Development from Boston College, and a Masters of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Northeastern University. Currently pursuing a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Forensic Psychology, I’ve had experience ranging from working with children aged birth to 7 in the school setting to adolescents in residential placement, and incarcerated adults. Tired of feeling unsure of who you are: your “purpose,” what sparks joy for you, whether you are living authentically or not? Are you ready to face areas of pain or darkness that you have long disregarded, buried, yet to grieve, or attempted to forget? Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, shame, intense sadness, self-medication or debilitating negative thoughts? I can help you find your way through these unanswered questions, toward emotional healing, growth, and identity strengthening.

I received my B.A. in Psychology with a minor in African American Studies from the University of Texas in Austin. I also received my M.A. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University. For over three years, I worked primarily with adult and adolescent clients at a community mental health clinic, where the majority of cases were court-mandated for therapy due to issues of substance abuse, child custody/DCFS cases, family/domestic violence, trauma, anger management issues, etc.

At ECCTS, I work with various ages ranging from children through adolescent and adult individuals. My therapeutic approach is holistic, integrating 3 therapeutic modalities: 1) psychodynamic therapy looking into family history, parental and personal attachment styles, defense mechanisms, unconscious internal conflicts, etc.; 2) person-centered therapy, where I am congruent with my clients, providing empathy and unconditional positive regard, understanding that the Client is the expert; and 3) strength-based therapy, where the focus is on the Client’s innate strengths and resilience, building confidence, self-esteem, and positive self-talk. I am no stranger to incorporating creative techniques with my clients, depending on personal preferences, such as art therapy, play therapy, aromatherapy, guided meditation, deep breathing exercises, journaling, dream work, and more.

Allow me to provide you (or your child) the earnest human connection you may be seeking or have been lacking. In psychotherapy, my focus is your transformation. As your therapist, my objective is to genuinely listen to your concerns, compassionately mirror your experiences, support you through your personal goals, and sincerely confront your perspectives or defenses, which may no longer serve you. I am committed to catalyzing your growth and development into a healthier, more fulfilled you, based on your terms and on your timing. If you commit to looking inward and challenging yourself to evolve through your work in therapy with me, I commit to accompanying you and supporting you every step of the way.

I have spent over 20 years working with individuals, couples, small groups, and large groups on concepts that build intimacy, communication skills, conflict resolution, forgiveness, and reconciliation. My greatest quality is that I am a great listener. My compassionate approach allows my clients to trust me and provides me opportunities to assist them in finding solutions to some of life’s most challenging issues.

I am ideally suited to give Relational Counseling. I offer insight, options, and tools for couples to apply immediately, and hopefully change their lives. For those not married, I go through a series of classes that help them determine their suitability for marriage and the discovery of self.

The factors that make my practice unique, is that I use metaphors, illustrations, and handouts to fortify the concepts that I am trying to build within my clients. I am able to establish a genuine rapport and trust with my clients, and therefore can move a lot sooner towards solutions.

People have always said that therapy is not popular amongst the African American
community. It’s not that it is not popular, it is more so that when we seek out therapy we
rarely find any therapist that looks like us, and can identify with our experience as being
Black in America. This is one of the main reasons that drove me into the field of therapy
and counseling. I desire to create a safe place for healing with a therapist that you can
relate to.

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. I received my
